Gary Speed: The Press Speculate!
This weekend, Wales manager Gary Speed was found hanged at his home, apparently the result of a suicide.  At the time of writing, this is all that has been confirmed at the inquest into his death.  Regardless, the issue of mental health and depression has been brought to the forefront, particularly in the media, desperate to make sense of this horrible tragedy.  But why does it have to be so fucking hamfisted? Yesterday's Mail managed to mangle together some quotes from Gary's agent, to produce the headline Gary Speed 'was not depressed... he was happily married'.  The truth is, nobody knows what was going on in Gary's head.  He appeared on television on Saturday and several of his friends have said ...

The Media and Big Brother
Big Brother feels like it could have been back for days, weeks or even a month now. In fact, it could even have finished weeks ago, quietly put out of its misery while nobody was looking. With TV reviews for the likes of Made in Chelsea, Hotter Than My Daughter and a number of shows starring ‘actor’ Will Mellor; we’ve watched more B-list TV vehicles than you’ve had hot dinners. Had we used that time productively, we could have…I dunno…built……something. I guess. Anyway, we know it’s dirge and instantly forgettable, and most of our reviews tend to be acerbic rants full of swearing, but when it’s early evening and there’s nothing else on the box except Tool Acadamy re-runs, what else are you going to do with yourself? Talk to people? Interact with the outside world? Pfft, yeah alright, mate. However, some people ...

Half-a-story Star talk Soaps
Let's count all the ways in which this Daily Star article is terrible. It's 58 words long, and still took the combined efforts of two people to chunder out. They don't bother to mention which show the girl will be appearing on. It's Hollyoaks, in case you wanted to avoid it. The screenshot contains the phrase "Alex is a wannabe WAG" three separate times Her relationship with everyone's favourite bell-end Ashley Cole is somehow supposed to be relevant AND interesting. It's a news story about a plot on Hollyoaks. Hungover Sunday morning, student-amusing, pseudo-masturbatory soap Hollyoaks. What the hell is "Soaper Star"? Is it REALLY a play on "Super Star"? REALLY? REALLY? Oh dear. Such is the paucity of the Star's ...
