Liz Jones: Stop bullying Our Future Queen by shoutingatco.ws

Nobody’s favourite fashionista Liz Jones is all a-tither. And what’s the problem? It turns out that some nasty Americans are picking on Kate Middleton:

The debate was sparked when one American fashion commentator declared of our future Queen: ‘If you take Kate out of the royal family, put her on a street in New York, you wouldn’t look at her twice’.

It didn’t take long for others to join in the assault, berating her sense of style and doubting that the ‘Kate Effect’ would stand the test of time.

You hear that? Our future Queen! How dare they! Liz just can’t understand, asking “Why does the fashion world hate Kate Middleton?” In an interesting non sequitur, she says: “She should also ignore the PC brigade who tut-tut at anyone who spends more than £50 on a dress. Kate needs good fabrics that won’t crease, or show lumps and bumps. This isn’t about money, it’s about taste.”

And so she blathers on for a few hundred words, telling us exactly how Kate has gotten it right, and how the fashion press are a bunch of idiots.

But what sort of things have the Americans been saying about our future Queen, then?

• It is all so casual. And normal. And (apart from Ralph Lauren, which tempts me to place a bet at William Hill on the honeymoon destination featuring tents and the occasional leopard) staggeringly, mind-bogglingly cheap and disappointingly pedestrian.
• My main problem with Kate’s shopping spree last week is not her choice of labels, so much as that she shouldn’t be picking up clothes piecemeal, on a whim or, worse, in a last-minute panic.
• The problem is, Kate has yet to appoint a personal stylist or wardrobe mistress. Emily Sheffield, the deputy editor of Vogue and Samantha Cameron’s sister, is most definitely not, contrary to many newspaper reports, acting as Kate’s style adviser.
• Kate’s role is a sartorial minefield that needs an expert eye to steer her through safely.Rummaging around in Warehouse, returning a potential honeymoon garment in a size ten last week and swapping it for an eight (like most brides, she has lost weight, presumably through nerves and lack of time to eat), spending 20 minutes in a communal changing room, just will not pass muster in the years ahead.
• I only hope she has been weaned out of those blue tea dresses, cropped linen jackets and wedges by [the wedding].
• Kate should have been skipping in light-as-air heels across the Palace lawns, not doing an impression of Max Wall!
• My only gripe with Kate is her hair, which is now a little too long, and too flicked at the ends.
• Kate does her own make-up, which is commendably frugal, not to mention brave, considering her status.But in my opinion, she is hiding behind a little too much slap on this occasion, which serves to make her look old beyond her years.
• I adore you Kate, but I’m afraid I don’t go for this jacket from the up-market chain Whistles (currently available in the sale, down from £125 to £60). It’s too boxy and it doesn’t have a collar.In my opinion, a black Burberry Prorsum biker would have really got William’s pulse ­racing. Yes, it might have cost a f­ortune, but at least Burberry is British. Or failing that, how about a more boyish, comfortable blazer?

  Oh, and sorry to sound so picky, but a jacket done up over a dress is just wrong.

Except, of course, none of those nit-picky, bitchy comments were made by an American. They were all from the myriad of tedious columns penned about Kate’s fashion sense in the Daily Mail. By Liz Jones.

   The hypocrisy should come as no surprise, but:

   “She should also ignore the PC brigade who tut-tut at anyone who spends more than £50 on a dress. Kate needs good fabrics that won’t crease, or show lumps and bumps. This isn’t about money, it’s about taste.”

   “In my opinion, a black Burberry Prorsum biker would have really got William’s pulse ­racing. Yes, it might have cost a f­ortune, but at least Burberry is British.”

   Didn’t Jones just get back from Somalia, complaining about how detached she is from money? What an utter tool.
